If your hearing aid doesn’t seem quite as effective lately, you might need a routine check-up. Just like going to the dentist or taking your dog for a wellness checkup, you and your hearing aids need periodic check-ups for best performance. The best way to make sure you’re hearing everything you should is to practice these techniques at least once a year:

Schedule a hearing check and conformity evaluation

Our hearing can change over time, and a delicate piece of technology like your hearing aid can lose some of its sharpness at the same time. Make an appointment with your audiologist for an annual hearing check and to have your hearing aids evaluated to be sure that they conform to the levels required for your needs. Even a tiny adjustment can make a huge difference in the way you perceive the world around you. Our office will also check to make sure your hearing aids are serviced and cleaned properly during the visit, which can prevent issues from arising in the future.

Change the Batteries?

This topic isn’t as simple as it used to be.  Some hearing aids today require replaceable and disposable batteries and other hearing aids are equipped with rechargeable batteries. With replaceable batteries, a battery change when a problem is suspected is a routine solution.  However, periodically take a minute or two to make sure the battery compartment is clean and free of corrosion to assure service isn’t interrupted.

Rechargeable batteries typically require professional service because of the way they are sealed into the case of the hearing aid. Rechargeable batteries are expected to last about three years before replacement is required.  If the battery needs charging sooner than expected, a service or repair may be necessary.

Clean the Hearing Aids

Your hearing aids are positioned on and inside your ears, so they’ll naturally come in daily contact with ear wax, skin oils and residue. Even the smallest amount of wax can muffle the sound, so it’s important that you clean your hearing aids regularly. Clean them inside and out routinely and contact your hearing care specialist to find out if they offer free intensive cleaning.
